This World Mental Health Day, we’re calling on everyone to open up to mental health, to talk, and to listen.

We all deserve to feel safe and supported when talking about our mental health. But too often, mental health stigma leaves people feeling isolated and ashamed. At worst, it prevents people from getting support, finding employment, or having open conversations.

Attitudes towards mental health have improved, but the stories of many are still not being heard or understood.

That's why at the Thames Valley Kings we built a successful partnership with Chris Hunt, The FUNdamental Coach to not only bring the best out of our members on the court but also support them mentally too...

Also, we have an awesome safeguarding officer and team in place to help provide links to relevant organisations that could be useful to assist you.

Kings more then just a Club....

What's better than winning the lottery???...

Winning all three opening games to the new season!

Three epic battles on court today, starting with a great win in Division three against a determined Aces team that didn't for a second let their heads drop! An all-out war in Division two with
both teams swapping the lead a bunch of times, before a 4th Quarter flurry and a debut in Premier League that will live on the memory!

Huge Thanks to The Owls, Cardiff Met Archers (Thanks for the Welsh cakes, we'll return the favour to you in Cardiff!) and the Aces

Lets take a look at what was going on at this time in the past in this week's #KingsRewind!

In 2013 - Four Kings members (Including Future Paralympian Kayla Bell) represented England South at the 2013 School Games at the EIS in Sheffield and won Bronze Medal!

In 2015, we played out first ever game in Division Three (after two seasons in the development league) of the British Whellchair Basketball League - welcoming the Cardiff Celts to Kennet Leisure

In 2017, Kings Supporter and Table Offical Vicki Thomas, challenged herself to fundraise for us - the self-confessed non-runner running a 5k for us.

and finally, in 2019 - we announced our first event in our huge 15th anniversary celebrations - an all-day fundraiser to be held on October 5th 2019.

PUTTING FIRE IN THE BELLY!🔥🔥🔥

We understand the importance of getting children into having a healthy lifestyle at a young age and we believe wheelchair basketball can be a key activity in a rich array of sports and physical activities.

That's why we love this quote from one of our new junior member's parents

"The wheelchair basketball sessions at Thames Valley Kings have been fantastic for My Son

Not only has he loved the sessions themselves but we've noticed amazing carry-over benefits into other aspects of his life such as increased confidence in his regular wheelchair use and a
new vigor in his adaptive rock-climbing

One of the instructors said wheelchair basketball had given Him a real 'fire in his belly'"

Due to sepsis, a former member of the #KingsArmy is now living with rare life limiting conditions. The only treatments available are not available on the NHS.

Many people who had their lifes touched by Vickie's contagious smile and bubbly personality both on and off-court.

Vickie not only played, she coached and sat on our committee, and was always willing to go the extra mile for us.

Please help, if you can. Nothing is too small.

Thank you

Yesterday, British Wheelchair Basketball announced the creation of the Women's Premier League.

To meet this ambition, British Wheelchair Basketball have also announced four High-Performance Partnerships, operating at university sites across the UK. The universities will each be home to a Women’s Premier League team, with franchises based at:
Cardiff Metropolitan, Loughborough UEL (East London), and Worcester

The High-Performance Partnerships will become centres of excellence for wheelchair basketball in the UK for both men and women.

These Partnerships will develop and nurture wheelchair basketball talent, acting as hubs to incubate and develop future elite athletes and increase access to the Paralympics talent pathways across the UK.

Here's to the future.

As we count down the minutes to the end of the year - in what has been a unique one, we wanted to reflect on it.....

2020 started with the Kings continuing to climb toward our club development goals, we were able to start the year with three adult teams in two respective league competitions - BWB and UKWB as well as continuing our usual Junior League Team!

Our first adult team flew in 2020 on a rocket, undefeated and looking for promotion glory, our second team was also beginning to gel and see some results on the court too...

Our Juniors were battling out in epic contests in a tough opening round and look to have booked their place at Elite 8s finals...

Off-Court, Kings became a Charitable incorporated organization and we kicked off and selected our first Club Hall of Fame member!

Unfortunately in March, Covid-19 then hit!

We had to completely change how we work - including finding new ways to get our members engaged and how we better supported our members mentally.

We still Yearn for the day we can get back to normal and continue to grow the club, but until that day, let's look at 2020 as a small block in a long road to success.

The Future is still bright!

Here's to 2021!

International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) is a United Nations-sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally on 3 December.

According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 percent of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with a disability. Of this number, it’s estimated 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition— and two-thirds of these people will not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination and neglect.

Another 69 million individuals are estimated to sustain Traumatic Brain Injuries each year worldwide, while one in 160 children are identified as on the autism spectrum.

These are just some examples of the millions of people currently living with a disability that is not immediately apparent, and a reminder of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with a disability, both visible and invisible.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation, disconnect, disrupted routines and diminished services have greatly impacted the lives and mental well-being of people with disabilities right around the world. Spreading awareness of invisible disabilities, as well as these potentially detrimental— and not always immediately apparent— impacts on mental health is crucial as the world continues to fight against the virus.

Thames Valley Kings are proud supporters of International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) 2020

Some Sad news as we had hoped we would be back at training on Saturday after the Second Lockdown.

British Wheelchair Basketball can confirm that the sport in England will remain in full-suspension until further notice.

Further to the new guidance published last night (at 7pm, 1st December 2020), British Wheelchair Basketball is now required to resubmit their revised Return to Play guidance for review and approval by DCMS and Public Health England.

BWB hope to have further updates shortly regarding revised ‘Return to Play’ plans for England, in line with these new England Government tier restrictions.

The Club's Covid Officer will be attending a meeting tonight and will provide the feedback on any updates.
